Pastors for Peace Caravanista Hosts Needed – July 16th, 2011

Trinity has committed to hosting 20 Caravanistas on Saturday, July 16th.  Caravanista hosts pick folks up at Trinity, provide them with an evening meal and a place to sleep, feed them breakfast, and transport them back to Trinity in the morning. While the church could certainly accommodate the caravan participants in the church building, we would prefer to offer them a lovingly prepared bed in someone’s home as well as the hospitality of individual Trinity members.

If you are able to host one or more Caravanistas, please contact Amy at mail@tumc.org to sign up, or sign up on the clipboard on Sunday.

Pastors for Peace is a special ministry of the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization (IFC)), and was created in 1988 to pioneer the delivery of humanitarian aid toLatin Americaand the Carribean.  Many thousands of people have participated since their founding in more than 40 caravans to Mexicoand Central America, 16 to Cuba and many delegations and work brigades. Trinity UMC has hosted the caravan volunteers when they drive throughAustinfor many years.

This year caravan member and activist, Rev. Luis Barrios, Ph.D. will be preaching at Trinity at the 10:30am celebration. Luis is a professor of psychology and ethnic studies at John Jay College of Criminal Justice-City University of New York. He is also a weekly columnist of El Diario La Prensa inNew York City, one of the oldest Spanish newspapers in theUnited States. Luis is the associate priest at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in West Harlem and the spiritual adviser for the Iglesia San Romero de Las Americas-UCC in the Washington Heights community.

FromTexasthe caravan will travel toCubaviaMexico, without asking for or accepting aU.S.government license, as a disciplined act of civil disobedience against theU.S.blockade and travel ban, and as ambassadors for a ‘people-to-people’ foreign policy based in mutual respect.
